Why Santa (and You) Should Never Walk on Your Roof

December 18, 2023Safety

As the holiday season approaches, stories of Santa Claus landing his heavy sleigh on rooftops abound. While Santa's magical sleigh might not cause damage, real-world foot traffic on your roof is a major cause of roof leaks and warranty invalidation. Whether you are hanging holiday lights, checking an AC unit, or attempting a DIY patch, here is why you should stay off your roof.

1. Puncture Risks

Single-ply commercial roofing membranes (like TPO or EPDM) are tough, but they can be easily punctured by small stones embedded in your shoe soles, dropped screws, or sharp tool edges. Shingles can lose their protective granules underfoot, making them vulnerable to UV breakdown. A single puncture can lead to water tracking along the decking, creating hard-to-find leaks.

2. Personal Safety Hazards

Roofing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the country. Sloped roofs present obvious slide hazards, but even flat roofs can be dangerous due to unprotected edges, skylights that can break under weight, and wet or slippery surfaces. Professionals use fall protection equipment, safety harnesses, and warning lines to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.

3. Warranty Invalidation

Most commercial roof manufacturers' warranties contain strict clauses regarding unauthorized roof modifications and trade damage. If a manufacturer's representative finds evidence that a leak was caused by foot traffic, the repair cost will not be covered. Always hire certified roofing maintenance professionals to perform inspections and access the roof.
